Hey Hawks!
This Thursday, we explored chemical reactions! We first discussed what chemical reactions are and then explored two examples/activities: elephant toothpaste and slime! For the elephant toothpaste experiment, we kicked things off with a demonstration of the reaction, followed by a breakdown of what exactly happened. The students learned about the roles yeast and dish soap play in the reaction and the concept of a catalyst. Next, we moved on to slime! The students learned about non-Newtonian fluids and how glue and borax solutions combine to create slime. Additionally, we discussed the differences between the two reactions: elephant toothpaste involves the breaking apart of hydrogen peroxide molecules, while slime is the result of two substances combining to create something new. Finally, to wrap the session up, the students were able to create their own slime. They all stayed engaged through the demonstrations and activities, predicting what happened behind the reactions and asking insightful questions to better understand the material. Overall, it was a very fun time, and everyone left with their own slime!
