Columbia Weekly Review (10/24/24)

October 24, 2024

Hi everyone, welcome to the 4th week at Columbia Elementary School! Today, we continued finishing our environment projects using mainly recyclable materials. Before we started, I gave a brief lesson on responsibilities, so the kids understood they had to keep their workspace clean and take only what they needed. With my sister and the president of my school's STEM club, we assisted each team with creating their masterpieces. Last week, one project was unfortunately scrapped, but the boys were able to rebuild a much more elegant model. In the end, we presented the projects to each other. Here are the teams and their projects:

  • We Hate Mondays: a nuclear power plant covered with snow and spiky objects, suggesting the danger of a nuclear meltdown.
  • We The People: a whimsical park with a picnic bench by the street. This team has a great eye on aesthetics, decorating the landscape with butterflies, seashells, and flowers. They utilized my shoebox very incredibly.
  • Kids Who Should Not Have Nukes But Do Anyways: a nuclear power plant, but they added grass onto the chimney to suggest clean energy.

It was such a blast seeing all the kids demonstrating their teamwork and creativity. Next week, we will have more volunteers from the STEM club to keep the class engaged, but I was happy to have made it halfway into the program. See you soon!
