On the Thursday before break, November 19, me and various others from my robotics team went in and held our 4th session, and it went well.Me and a friend held an estimathon, where the kids guessed how many plastic fruit pieces were in a container and how many stars were in a small bag. The kids had three guesses where we guided them and they were miraculously able to guess exactly right several times. Then we estimated the length and width of the room and found the perimeter. One time, we estimated by lining our feet. We finished off with estimating how many of these lengths we must run in order to run a mile, introducing concepts of scale. Also, the kids had a great time exploring probability by creating bar graphs of the sums of dice, and the distribution, the shape slowly came out; and we put out the question why this might be the case. And lastly, they had a lot of fun playing with pattern blocks, forming larger shapes out of shape components, like mini puzzles, and seeing how many shapes they can form.
