Hello everyone!
Last Thursday, me and the largest group yet of 7 others ran another teaching session. It had been a while, and there was a good group of kids. I ran the math station, where I taught some key math concepts on rewriting numbers with addition and multiplication that provided the context and build-up for a little game at the end. I was focused on ways to rewrite numbers and get the same sum or product, with an example with minimizing the number of coins to represent some value and the finding the group sizes for which I can split some number of apples evenly, using only 3 numbers to construct other numbers, and lastly opened up the 4 4s problem.
Meanwhile, there were other more hands-on activities: there was an origami station, writing a message on a sheet of paper and then folding it into an origami heart, in only 8 total steps, really 4 major ones, which was surprisingly effective and good-looking for its simplicity. And lastly, there was a station where kids made their own bath bombs (safe yes) with some mixing of chemicals and then putting them into a mold, a way to introduce a bit of chemistry in a fun way. All the kids both were well-behaved and seemed happy to be there, and the new tutors who joined had a great time, an overall success!
